A civilization is imprisoned in a linguistic contour which no longer matches, or matches only at certain ritual, arbitrary points, the changing landscape of fact. Is there some linguistic factor in the riddle of the collapse of Mayan culture? Did the language, with its presumably high proportion of immutable, hieratic phraseology, no longer provide a usable, generative model of reality?
