I even recalled the story (a true one, I’ve been told) of the book store employee who one day found in his shop, high on a top shelf, among old German books forgotten there for ages, a volume of Jean-Paul (an author he had never read, but whose excessively short name intrigued him, and on whom he had taken, a priori, a sort of crush): he began to translate it, and the result at which he arrived seemed to him so fascinating that he immediately decided to devote the rest of his life to exploring other German Romantic writers, on whom he became the best-known specialist.
